OVERALL:
It’s important for players visiting Armidale to factor in the height above sea level at which the city sits, almost 1,000 metres above sea level, making Armidale the highest city in Australia. The height means the ball travels further in good clear conditions, and I’ve have found I need one or two irons less in comparison with a coastal course.
HOLE 1 PAR 4
337 metres Black and White Mens Tee
338 metres Ladies Tee

Aim down the left side to allow for the left-to-right sloping fairway. Leave yourself with a full shot into the green, a difficult one for your ball to hold because parts of it slope away from you. You definitely don’t want to finish up over the back.
HOLE 2 PAR 4
396 metres Black and White Mens Tee
324 metres Ladies Tee

Aim down the right side to allow for a right-to-left bounce. Club selection is crucial for your second shot, for which you need to factor in the drop in elevation to the green.
HOLE 3 PAR 4
357 metres Black and White Mens Tee
347 metres Ladies Tee

A slight bend left to right will help you to negotiate the corner dogleg. A tee shot down the left side is better, as long as you don’t go too far and get blocked out by the pine trees. The shot into the green needs to be spot-on as there is trouble all around the elevated two-tier surface.
HOLE 4 PAR 3
149 metres Black and 119 metres White Mens Tee
133 metres Ladies Tee

The first of the course’s two infamous short par-3s, measuring only 149 metres from the back tee. But don’t be fooled – it packs a strong punch. If you don’t manage to make the green, the best place to miss is short and in front. Wayward shots will be punished, sometimes severely.
HOLE 5 PAR 5
From the Tee
From the Tee
487 metres Black and White Mens Tee
449 metres Ladies Tee

The longest par-5 on the course, but reachable in two for long hitters. You need to be careful off the tee because of the small pond lurking on the left. Take care also with your second shot, for which you need to decide whether to lay up or try to fly the small creek running across the fairway about 65 metres out from the green. The left side of this hole is guarded by an out-of-bounds fence.
HOLE 6 PAR 4
323 metres Black and 303 White Mens Tee
321 metres Ladies Tee

This is a cracking short dogleg par-4 where long hitters are tempted to have a go. The key is to find the middle to left of the fairway off the tee. Anything too close on the right will be blocked out from the green. Putts can get really quick from the back of this green when the roller has been out.
HOLE 7 PAR 3
171 metres Black and 151 White Mens Tee
119 metres Ladies Tee

Club selection is the key on this 171-metre par-3. The green drops off significantly at the front, and if you’re short your ball roll back down the hill towards the dam, which you can’t see from the tee. Over the back isn’t much better, with everything sloping away on the difficult two-tiered green.
HOLE 8 PAR 4 MENS • PAR 5 LADiES
415 metres Black and White Mens Tee
408 metres Ladies Tee

A good testing downhill slight dogleg par-4. Again the key is to find the fairway and be able to see the green, which has one of the mildest slopes on the course, so you’ll have a good chance if you need to make a putt to keep your round on track.
HOLE 9 PAR 5
From the Tee
From the Tee
423 metres Black and 386 White Mens Tee
349 metres Ladies Tee

Famous for the slope that runs all the way along, getting steeper as you get closer to the green. It’s not long, but the shot up to the green is challenging and normally blind, which makes club selection crucial. The green is two-tiered, and downhill putts can be slippery.

HOLE 14 PAR 3
146 metres Black and 133 White Mens Tee
115 metres Ladies Tee

The second of our difficult little par-3s, this hole has everything. A well placed dam and bunker, plus a drop off on the right, have been known to bring many a good stroke round unstuck. The solution’s simple, though – just hit the green from the tee!
